Why Tallow Skincare Works
Modern skincare is built around plant oils, synthetic additives, and long ingredient lists.
For most of human history, skincare looked very different.
Soap, salves, and balms were traditionally made from animal fats, especially tallow, rendered beef fat that closely resembles the lipid structure of our own human skin.
At a bèstia, we believe that the old approach still makes a lot of sense.
Skin Recognizes Fat
Human skin is protected by a natural barrier made largely of lipids, fats that help maintain moisture and defend against environmental stress.
Tallow contains many of the same types of fatty acids found in our skin’s own protective layer, including:
oleic acid
palmitic acid
stearic acid
conjugated linoleic acid
Because of this similarity, tallow absorbs easily and helps support our skin barrier rather than overwhelming it because our lipids understand it.
Nutrients That Matter
Properly rendered grass-fed beef tallow naturally contains fat-soluble vitamins that are beneficial for skin health, including:
vitamin A
vitamin D
vitamin E
vitamin K
These nutrients are traditionally associated with supporting skin renewal, elasticity, and barrier function.
When used in skincare, tallow provides both structure and nourishment in a form the skin can readily use.
Remarkably Stable
One of tallow’s overlooked qualities is its natural stability.
Many plant oils used in modern skincare are high in polyunsaturated fats, which can oxidize quickly and require stabilizers or preservatives.
Tallow, by contrast, contains a higher proportion of stable saturated and monounsaturated fats, making it naturally resistant to oxidation.
This stability helps products remain simple and effective without relying on complicated formulations.
A Long History of Use
Long before modern cosmetics, people relied on simple fats to care for their skin.
Traditional soaps, balms, and salves across Europe and North America were commonly made from beef tallow or other animal fats.
These ingredients were valued not because they were trendy, they were valued because they worked.
Modern skincare often overlooks this long history in favor of novelty.
We think some traditions are worth remembering.
Simple by Design
At a bèstia, tallow isn’t just an ingredient.
It’s the foundation.
By building our formulas around high-quality, carefully rendered, grass-fed tallow, we can keep the rest of the ingredient list intentionally short.
No unnecessary fillers.
No decorative additives.
No complicated routines.
Just traditional fats and thoughtful formulation.
Real Skincare for Real Humans.
Human skin evolved with animal fats, not seed oils.
Modern skincare may have forgotten that but,
a bèstia remembers.
Because you are not a plant.
